Dr. Arvind Shenoi, our pediatrician

A few months ago, I had written a post asking readers to refer good pediatricians practicing in Bangalore. And there were many responses, thanks to all you folks who referred the peds you liked. Since then, I have had many questions from other readers about whom I had chosen and what my experiences were. For different reasons, we continued to go to our local ped. But last week, I called Dr. Arvind Shenoi’s office and got an appointment at their Vyalikaval office. My son completed 3 years, a month ago and my daughter will soon be 5. So, a perfect time I thought.

Here are my reasons to choose him:

  1. He was one of the few who practiced closer to where we live. He practices in Domlur (the earlier Indiranagar office has been moved to Domlur) and Vyalikaval. The Vyalikaval location is not too bad, distance wise, for us. (Most of the recommended docs practice in South Bangalore.)
  2. He was recommended more than once. Also, there was one comment about Dr. Shenoi that was very detailed and informative. Please read through the comments.

I called the Domlur office and they gave me the Vyalikaval office numbers. He visits the Vyalikaval office on 3 evenings - Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. And it was extremely easy to get an appointment. Now, this is not true for his Domlur office. There, they are packed quite a bit. We were to be seen at 8.00. And since everywhere in Bangalore, irrespective of when you are given an appointment, you still have to get into a queue in the receptionist’s log book, we went early. We were there before 7.30 pm and that was a good thing. Since, it was out first visit, the first thing the office did was to get the details of the kids into their computer. Yay!! Now, this is a big thing for me. :) I like the office to maintain basic records so that we have a history with them. They checked the children’s height and weight and entered that too. Yippeee!! If you are wondering why I am so happy at something so trivial, well it is not a common practice here In Bangalore. So, I was just thrilled that somebody cared to see where my kids were with their growth and to keep track of it by putting it with the other details on the comp! :)

We walked into the doc’s room at around 8.10 pm where we were first seen by Dr. Syed Maseehuddeen. He went through the vaccination records with us and copied it into a new folder that had vaccination details. Hetold us the ones that our kids were due for. He went through each of their histories with us and wrote it all up. Apparently, all that will go into their comp too. Later, Dr. Arvind Shenoi joined us. And the minute he saw Dr. Kaye’s name on the children’s vaccination records (from Camino Medical Group in Sunnyvale), he recognized the name, because of other bay area returnees. :) Apparently, a lot of people who went to Dr. Kaye go to Dr. Shenoi. Just goes to show how small the world actually is!

Overall, it was good. He seemed nice and warm. Not very forthcoming. But, if asked for info, he was very willing to go over things with us. He too went over the kids’ medical histories with us. They even had growth percentiles. :) And at the end of the visit, they had a hard copy folder for us to take home with us. It has the vaccination record, the office contact info, Dr. Shenoi’s mobile number for emergencies, and all paper work filed! Very cool. And that is what I liked the most too - the feeling that my kids matter to the doc’s office. So, my vote goes to him! LOL

I must mention that we have only gone there for regular physicals and not for any sicknesses. But, I have been told that he is very good at diagnosis and about prescribing non-anti-biotic meds. If you have your own experiences to add or ask questions, please do so in the comments.

  1. […] your pediatricians in the comments. We chose Dr. Arvind Shenoi and I have written about our visit here. Hope this will help those of you who are seeking info about […]

  2. Lovely thanks for this Chitra!

  3. very useful piece of information that too on a personal experience. hats off to you please keep going. we can refer to any one who is in need. It is nice of a pediatician doing full fledged file for the child ( his patient) and handing it over so he is doing a yeomen service by giving that so that what a parent can do is to just see and follow the schedule. wonderful let more no of such committed doctors come out in service of people. it is just important how a doctor diagnoised the disese if any and how he treats ( u have mention about less antibiotics les drugs these are all becoming rare things now a days)
hege bere bere specialists mele barali nimma postgala series.

  4. chitra
that info was indeed very helpful.
    Where exactly is “Vyalikaval”.??

  5. In response to Vidya’s comments above -

Dr.Nalini shenoy - dont take changes with this one..! she also visits the Diwakars Hospital. I have a very good opinon about the hospital - but have a very poor opinon about the visiting pediatrician. I have had a couple of bad experiences. in addition..my kid had a heart condition that she could not even diagnose. Its by chance that I visited Apollo hospital and discovered it.

The waiting line is because of the hospitals good reputation - but i am sure not many people would want to come back to her after one or two visits.

  6. Thanks Chitra for the info. We went to Dr. Arvind Shenoi’s clinic in Domlur and he is indeed a very good doctor. We went to 2 other docs before Dr. Shenoi but didn’t get satisfactory answers to our queries and also were not satisfied with the diagnosis.

However, Dr. Shenoi was very busy and didn’t have time to provide any other information except for what we asked him. We expect our pediatritian to let us know things that we might not know as new parents but I guess it’s not possible in a city like Bangalore. We sorely miss our pediatrist in Chandigarh!

  7. Some more:
My son is 3 yrs now and was born in Bangalore.
My gynaec was Dr Arvind Shenoi’s wife, Dr Pravina.
I will not think of anyone else for paediatrician or gynaecologist. After my son’s birth, I moved to Hyd and I was referred to a paediatrician by local friends, He saw the folder and immediately recognized Dr Shenoi who was his classmate during their post-grad days.

I have never experienced him giving antibiotics unless absolutely necessary.

  8. Very useful piece of information

  9. Hi…I just came across your blog and this site a few days ago since my hubby found a good opportunity in B’lore and is determined to R2I in the next few months. I on the other hand am still paranoid about a lot of things…especially since we have an infant who will be turning 1 soon. Any tips and advise on what to bring from here and what not etc.?

  10. Hi Divya,

Check the sections on R2I and R2I tips. Chitra has given a bunch of tips there.

Chitra - thanks for all the posts and tips. They are of tremendous help to a lot of peope who are considering to R2I. Your posts provide an “insider” view of life in India and are of tremendous help.

Hope you keep blogging actively :).

    -Susheel

  11. Thanks Susheel…I guess I am looking for answers to some specific questions about infant care in India and what is available v/s what is not. Check out the latest post on my blog ( http://indianinfant.blogspot.com/2008/07/ponderings-about-baby-stuff-in-india.html) and see if you or other readers on this site can help answer any of them.

  12. hi chitra
i am the one with the detailed comment on dr arvind shenoi last post! and am glad to see that you liked him. we are still dr shenoi loyalists!
and now with most vaccines done for my kids they like him too!

  13. Hi Chitra,

Thanks a lot for the post on pediatricians. We just moved back to bengaluru from D.C and my kids had their first visit to Dr.Shenoi’s office, he is simply great. I took my kids to him after reading through your post, and your blog is really really good and very helpful for R2I parents. I had mailed you several months back asking about schools. I read your post about that too, but could not secure a seat for my first son in any of the good schools for this year since we were a little late for the admission process. Hopefully next year we will move him to better school. Thanks again.

  14. Hi Chitra,
Thanks for the wonderful blog. I came upon this site when I was searching preschools in North Bangalore. We are planning to R2I in the next couple of months from US. Wanted to know if Dr.Shenoy has any clinics in the North Bangalore area. Also, when does enrollment process begin for preschools.
    Thanks again. Shuba

  15. What is it with you Bay Area refugees? We don’t need validation for our doctors from sheeple like you.

  16. Dear Chitra
My wife and self accidently went into this web and found a lot of comments about your serach for a good paed. for you children and Dr Arvind who is our son
He had a lot of ideas in puttingup things equivalent to what you people miss but there are many constraints here
He is so busy he does not have time for his own children and us
There are problems peculiar to India and Bangalore in particular including enormous travel time between house and work stations
Hope things would be better in your children’s time
Best wishes for their brainy and brawny growth

  17. Hi CHitra,
Thanks for the post on Dr. Shenoi. I wanted to comment that I took my son to Dr. Karthik Nagesh at the mother and CHild clinic in INdiranagar and was very dissappointed! Without sounding like a complainer I want to make the following comments so others have it before they go to him:
-The waiting area was full of mosquitoes as the AC was not on.
-The children had two old toys to play with.
-They took their height and weight and recorded it on a chart that I took home so, they have no record unless you take the record with you.
-Once Dr. Nagesh was able to see us (we had to wait despite an appintment but I can live that) he put the baby on a rubber mat which every other baby had been on previous to him. He is not very forthcoming with information. answer the questions you ask him and appears quite happy about prescribing antibiotics. I asked him why he does not keep records and he metioned that too many people comt to his office for one off visits so he can’t.
All this being said, I think I will defnitely go to Dr. Shenoi. I think if one can charge Rs.500 for a ten minute visit, one can provide better service.
    Thanks, SHilpa

  18. What Shilpa told is absolutely true. Karthik Nages has only one thing in mind…MONEY and doesn’t care about your baby when it comes to prescribing medicines. I got my child delivered in Manipal Hospital. he is the main pediatrician there. He just makes sure that Manipal makes money on his behalf. Maybe he has got some incentive in that, i believe. He has billed nearly Rs.60,000 for an infant who was absolutely healthy. He said that baby has got jaundice and instead of putting the kid for phototherapy put him in a incubator and later when the junior doc is saying that the kid id absolutely fine and doing good….he walks in and says jaundice has not come down and sugested to put him under phototherapy. when the bilurubin content in the blood level had gone down from 16 to 9, he says jaundice has increased and made us to stay in the hospital for 2 more days. I don’t know if he is the only doc who behaves this way or all docs behave the same way. They need to justify things when they are suggesting something. Its not the money that matters, but its the way the new born is treated.

  19. shilpa’s comment is absolutely right……..he is the one of moneymakers rather than a good doctor

  20. My name is Janhvi and I am 9 months old. My mom took me to Dr. Arvind Shenoy and he is indeed very sweet doctor, and I recommend all my other infant freinds to consult him for vaccinations, regular check ups or anything else.

My experiences, at Sagar Appolo ( where I was born), was not very good. Doctors treated me like an object and injected me n took my blood N number of times.
I was puntured almost everywhere in search of blood. My mom n dad’s condition was miserable, and my mom crying and fighting with doctors could not help me either. :( . I will never forget those scary days.

Doctor Arvind Shenoy saved me. I love you doctor uncle.

  21. For those of you in Banaswadi/Jal Vaayu Vihar, Kalyan Nagar area, the best out here is Dr Pravin Bhopiah (Pravin is a lady contrary to the male sounding name).

Dr Pravin is good, she does not drug the kids, has a clean and a nice clinic (the basement in her home) and is forever besiged by parents like me. Both my children go here since we live close by and I have been very happy with her. I first went to Dr Sanjay Rao, didn’t like him too much, a little haughty and arrogant for my liking, but heard he is good, so that’s why I went, but after we switched over to Dr Pravin, we are thrilled. She will take your call on her cell phone most days when you have an emergency, has a great network of doctors if your child needs more than a pediatrician. We had returned from the US and both our kids were born there, but we are pretty happy with Dr Pravin.

She can be reached on 98450-77945

  22. Hi,

You have a great blog. I am very thankful to you for providing all this information. Could you or anyone else please let me know if the school free for kids who are American citizen any different than the Indian citizens

  23. Hi Tani’s mom,

I have not seen the school fees being differentiated based on citizenship. (I have seen it to be different at college though) - I guess based on some quota.

    -Chitra

  24. Hi Chitra,

Thanks for the wonderful wealth of information on Dr Shenoi. We returned from Sunnyvale, USA to Bangalore, India. After reading your blog we decided to make an appointment with him. Even though we are in whitefield, we decided to make the trip to domlur.

We went to his office yesterday for 6PM appointment for our daughters. We were there at 5:50 PM, they took height, weight and other stats. We were inside the patient room at 6PM (on time )which is fantastic compared to wait times that we had in USA. There was a nice young lady doctor - I think she is his assistant, she asked all the questions and prepared the chart for Dr Shenoi.

Dr. Shenoi joined us in another 10 minutes. He was very patient with both my children. Very nice to all the requests made by my wife. He answered all our questions. He gave vaccinations that are due and the method as requested by wife and prepared the vaccination schedule right there.

My wife was very impressed by his kindness and attentiveness. He even prescribed vitamins for my wife. Even though he could have easily asked us to meet his wife who is also a doctor.

After the vaccination to baby doctor, while I took my first daughter to vital diags. next door, my infant baby daughter was crying due to vaccination. He took them again in to his office and provided more consultation. I hope his service continues in the same way.

We are very happy so far. Thanks for your referral. I have managed to alleviate one of the biggest concerns of my wife ie finding a good pediatrician in a new city.

    Warm Regards
    -Cal

  25. dr.aravind shenoy may be a good pediatrician, but he too is money minded like dr.karthik nagesh and other doctors in manipal. even in his clinic the charges are very high, and does not take much time.
for emergency we need to visit other junior doctor, in manipal casuality, where we are charged high. then why not have a good pediatrician who is available for emergency.
i changed my pediatrician from dr.shenoy to dr.sathish in divine speciality, and his clinic in vasanthanagar-home clinic.
he is down to earth person.understanding.
    i recomend dr.sathish
    mobile-9880291070.

    never dr.shenoy again.

  26. Hi Chitra,

    Compliments on a great blog.

I am a father of two month old twins at present in Seattle and will be moving to Bangalore in another couple of months.
Since our kids were premature they have peculiar conditions but are being looked after well in the US.Could anyone suggest a ped here who is a good neonatalogist or should we go to Dr Arvind Shenoy itself.

    Request an early response.

  27. Cal, I am glad the post was of use to you. :)

Smiling Child, thanks for dropping by. We have had very good experiences with Dr. Shenoi and will continue with him. :)

Narendra, congratson the twins. :) All the best with the move. We really like Dr. Shenoi and maybe the easiest thing for you to do is to go to him first and take it from there? I wouldnt know of a neonatalogist in particular.

  28. Why dont they ever pick up calls!Have been trying these numbers for quite few days now.Could you check if their numbers have changed?

  29. pal, I happy to post this for u all,
First i was consulting Dr Ramamurthy ,in cambridge layout, behind sai baba temple, he is OK ,but gives lot of antibiotics, and heavy doses, later i heard about of Dr Arivind shenoy, he is very good in giving medicines, never prescribe antibiotics, very rarely, his analysis is good ,but very busy, never get appointment during emergency, in those times I go to Dr Krishnan, In Indiranagar 1st stage behind Indiranagar police station. fees is nominal, also available in phone also.

  30. Hi all,

Can anybody give me Dr Arvind Shenoy’s mobile number or any other contact number where he can be reached please………

My daughter (2.1 yrs) weighs only 9.1 kg. Her birth weight was 2.7 kg. Her food intake has drastically reduced . Hardly eats breakfast. Lunch and dinner are such a struggle. Doesn’t drink milk.. have tried all diff flavors . Curd /cheese/paneer just a bit or 2. Has never been bottle fed. Hates pediasure. I really dont know what to do . I dont what her to be fat or chubby. Just want to increase her intake so that she is well nourished. Fruits/vegetables/ Rice / roti … only one or 2 teaspoons go in. SHe just wants to feed herself will will refuse to be fed by anyone else. She is not interested in junk foods even!!! Dont know what to do?

  34. Hello all,

Thanks for sharing info about pediatricians. We are moving to South Bangalore (Jaynagar) in 2 weeks from US. Can you recommend any doctors in the area?
    Thanks

  35. Chitra, Thanks for sharing the info. After reading your blog, I’m planning to take my daughter (7m old) to Dr Arvind Shenoy for regular check ups.
Btw I saw another blog with the same content as yours here
    http://smitavivek.blogspot.com/2009/04/dr-arvind-shenoi-our-pediatrician-and.html

  36. Who is Dr Arvind Shenoy? What does he do for a living?

  37. Long story short about Dr Shenoi.

He is one honest, hardworking and intelligent doctor who gives you value for money and simply does not believe in laughing his way to the bank.

  38. YUP !
You can say that again Raj.

  39. I went to Dr.Arvind Shenoy’s clinic yesterday with my Kid,since she has sever cold. The clinic guys told me that Dr will be in at 5:00 PM,but he came at 6:00 PM.Then when we enter his assistance came in and he started to check his ears with otoscope .The way he checked her ears was horrible and she started crying .Then he started to prescribe a long list of medicines .after 5 minutes,Dr.Arvind came in and he just explained the same medicines and left.According to me he is not a good Dr in taking care of babies.I always go to Dr.Santhosh Kumar,Amar jyothi Nursing home.I will say he is far better than Dr.Arvind. In my experiece whenever we visit Dr.Santosh.He treat the baby as his his own kid by giving lot of kisses and slowly do all checkings. So the baby never cry. Most of the time he won’t suggest any medicines and won’t believe in international charts.Very good Doctor. As soon as I left Dr.Arvind Shenoy’s clinic I just teared his subscription and we are going to Dr.Santosh’s clinic

  40. Hey Roy!
Have you heard of Dr Spock? If you have, then our Indian version is Dr Shenoi.

  41. Hi,
I just tried to get an appointment from Aravind Shenoi..but guess he is not available till December 16th!!!! I have an emergency so can i just walk in? My daughter is just 5 months old!!! Please let me know

  42. Yes Hema, you can walk in. And they will send you in between appointments. I hope your little one is doing better now.

  43. Where oh where is Dr A.S ??

  44. My daughter was undeer the treatment of Dr Mahesh Babu and we also are looking for alternative as Dr Babu has left India, If anyone of you know about good padeitric pulmonolgist in Banglore kindly let us know.
    thanks in advance.

  45. Hi

My daughter who is 4 months old was born at The Cradle Bangalore,We did a thorough research - we infact met few gyno’s and later chose Dr Kini ,our experience was fantastic.after the baby was born we have been consulting Dr Kishore-Pediatrician ( The one who owns n runs the hospital.).We are very happy with the hospital n the doctors at Cradle.A visit to the hospital will tell you why it is rated as the best Maternity Home in India.

  46. There are 2 Arvind Shenoy(s), Shenoy and Shenoi. Which one have you been praising?
I have heard good things abt Dr. Santosh in Amarjyothi Nursing Home (25280805, On CMH road near HDFC/ICICI ATMs, close to the CMH Hosp End of the road) as well.

  47. My son is a citizen of US and holds US passport. We had Indian visa valid for 5 years for him when we left US for good. After 5 years, we renewed his US passport. But, hadn’t applied for visa extension.
Again, his passport will expire in June 2010.
Both parents are citizens of India. Now he is 10 years old.
    My queries are:
    1. should we get permission to stay/register in Bangalore first?(I think its too late now)
    2. Should we apply for extension of visa in Bangalore?
    3. Can we renew his passport at Chennai first and later get the visa done?
    4. would Renewal of passport be a problem without having valid visa status in India?
    5. when can we apply for PIO card for him? (after the new passport.?)
    Thanks in advance!
    Kumar

  48. Dr Shenoi’s body language also gets a perfect 10.

Just like you found this page of Dr Arvind Shenoi’s,I suggest you take his advice…

  51. thanks hema, can i know wich all hospital he is visiting

  52. sorry HEM

  53. Manipal Hospital and on the private side it is Perinatal Clinic Domlur. Don’t ask me the contact numbers, the hospital staff will assist you. I hope your baby is better.

  54. Hi, I shifted to bangalore from delhi on 10th may. please can anyone help me with the contact details and address of a good pedaetrician around Mahadevpura or Marathalli.

  55. Highly recommend Dr A.N. Naidu if you are in the South Bangalore area - his office is based in Banashankari. We returned from the bay area a year + ago and he’s fabulous. He is patient and helps with any questions we have and the kids love him too.

He trained in the UK and returned to Bangalore himself about 2 years ago, so he has the western aesthetic in terms of anticipating questions and being objective and upfront in his diagnosis.

He does the weight and height checks during every visit too and he has a folder for every child for reference. We had some friends and relatives visiting form the US and we referred them to him when the kids fell sick - they felt reassured and were very impressed with his bedside manner and diagnosis and treatment.

  56. Can you post his address and telephone number of the clinic please.

  57. Shenoi just has a bedside manner which makes people think that he’s better than he really is.

For really serious illnesses all he will do is sent you to Manipal Ped emergency. That too after you’ve wasted precious time hanging around in his clinic’s waiting room.

But the real giveaway is his incompetent, unprofessional staff.

There will be 3 or 4 of them milling about, chatting with each other or on their cell phones. The meaning of the word “appointment” escapes them. While they have no problem in setting up appointments at odd hours, they have a policy of not answering the phone after 5pm. So if you’re stuck in traffic trying to get there in time, or you want to reconfirm - AS HE HIMSELF SUGGEST THAT YOU DO - 30 mins before the scheduled time, NO ONE WILL ANSWER.

I’ve personally tested this by calling them from my cell phone to see if any one would even look at the phone. Big surprise, they don’t.

Since Shenoi is their boss, I infer that this trickery is really his policy.

These jokers need to work at Domino’s pizza to learn the meaning of the word “professionalism.”

  58. @ Fed Up:
    Whoa !
Well they really seem to have made you hot under the collar, man !
But you seem to be barking up the wrong tree. They just are not the people you seem to have met.
Like they say one is entitled to one’s opinions but do you know they do have a huge fanfare? Mainly because they are so professional. So do not call them jokers. Nor is Dr Shenoi is a trickster.

  59. i had a very bad experience with Dr. Shenoy. My daughter was suffering from fever which was viral, but he misdiagnosed it as a case of sinusitis, antibiotics did not work, later an x-ray proved that she had no sinus. he then advised several blood tests (though blood test was done 4 days earlier to this day), and these new category blood tests included several rare blood diseases. He referred me to another doctor in manipal emergency who suggested to put her on intravenous antibiotic apart from those blood tests. It was then I just followed my instincts and refused to do as they suggested, brought my daughter back home and consulted Dr. Vandana Rao. She said no blood test was necessary, my daughter got viral, and should be fine in exact 2 days. She just gave medicine for cold and fever, and like she said, my daughter was fine in just 2 days. I was so thankful to her, and to god. God bless her. I would always recommend her to anyone i know.

  60. @Fed up…
I totally agree to what u mentioned, I observed the same thing too.

  61. We had a high opinion about Dr.Arvind Shenoi after reading these comments. So we took our son to his clinic but to my horror …the way he treated our child and the way he frightened us, we have come to the conclusion that he is not only an incompetent paediatrician but unfit to be called a doctor in the first place. Learn form other competent paediatricians in Bangalore and stop intimidating your patients. Also learn to speak with encouraging words with the parents of your patients….

  62. Dr Arvind Shenoi,frightening patients !? What a laugh !!

  63. he is like a god to me, i have gone to several doctors, no doctors is like dr.arvind shenoy, the way he see the child he can make out what the baby is feeling

  64. i have just moved to fraser town from out of the country. have twins of 15 months, can anyone recommend a good pediatrician close to the fraser town area?

  65. I had a lovely experience with Dr Vandana Rao, she gives you ample of time and does not prescribe unwanted medicines. Anyone living in south Bangalore should definitely visit her. You might have to wait more even if you have prior appt., however its worth waiting as she tells you everything you want to know, is available on phone, if she is busy you can sms her n she’ll respond back. Highly recommended for people living in BTM,Jayanagar, JPnagar, maruti nagar, jayadeva flyover etc

  66. Kpan: Can you please share Dr. Vandana Rao’s contact details pls. It is urgent!

  67. I would highly recommend Dr. Seema Mishra. One of the best pediatricians I have come across in India. So patient, warm, and a child friendly doctor. My daughter was smiling through her entire check up. Dr. Seema gives the parents enough time, attends to all questions. I am extremely happy to have consulted her.

  68. A person necessarily help to make severely posts I might state. That is the first time I frequented your website page and up to now? I surprised with the analysis you made to create this particular post amazing. Wonderful task!

  69. Thanks for the post. Will read on…
