Dr. Arvind Shenoi, our pediatrician
A few months ago, I had written a post asking readers to refer good pediatricians practicing in Bangalore. And there were many responses, thanks to all you folks who referred the peds you liked. Since then, I have had many questions from other readers about whom I had chosen and what my experiences were. For different reasons, we continued to go to our local ped. But last week, I called Dr. Arvind Shenoi’s office and got an appointment at their Vyalikaval office. My son completed 3 years, a month ago and my daughter will soon be 5. So, a perfect time I thought.
Here are my reasons to choose him:
- He was one of the few who practiced closer to where we live. He practices in Domlur (the earlier Indiranagar office has been moved to Domlur) and Vyalikaval. The Vyalikaval location is not too bad, distance wise, for us. (Most of the recommended docs practice in South Bangalore.)
- He was recommended more than once. Also, there was one comment about Dr. Shenoi that was very detailed and informative. Please read through the comments.
I called the Domlur office and they gave me the Vyalikaval office numbers. He visits the Vyalikaval office on 3 evenings - Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. And it was extremely easy to get an appointment. Now, this is not true for his Domlur office. There, they are packed quite a bit. We were to be seen at 8.00. And since everywhere in Bangalore, irrespective of when you are given an appointment, you still have to get into a queue in the receptionist’s log book, we went early. We were there before 7.30 pm and that was a good thing. Since, it was out first visit, the first thing the office did was to get the details of the kids into their computer. Yay!! Now, this is a big thing for me.
I like the office to maintain basic records so that we have a history with them. They checked the children’s height and weight and entered that too. Yippeee!! If you are wondering why I am so happy at something so trivial, well it is not a common practice here In Bangalore. So, I was just thrilled that somebody cared to see where my kids were with their growth and to keep track of it by putting it with the other details on the comp!
We walked into the doc’s room at around 8.10 pm where we were first seen by Dr. Syed Maseehuddeen. He went through the vaccination records with us and copied it into a new folder that had vaccination details. Hetold us the ones that our kids were due for. He went through each of their histories with us and wrote it all up. Apparently, all that will go into their comp too. Later, Dr. Arvind Shenoi joined us. And the minute he saw Dr. Kaye’s name on the children’s vaccination records (from Camino Medical Group in Sunnyvale), he recognized the name, because of other bay area returnees.
Apparently, a lot of people who went to Dr. Kaye go to Dr. Shenoi. Just goes to show how small the world actually is!
Overall, it was good. He seemed nice and warm. Not very forthcoming. But, if asked for info, he was very willing to go over things with us. He too went over the kids’ medical histories with us. They even had growth percentiles.
And at the end of the visit, they had a hard copy folder for us to take home with us. It has the vaccination record, the office contact info, Dr. Shenoi’s mobile number for emergencies, and all paper work filed! Very cool. And that is what I liked the most too - the feeling that my kids matter to the doc’s office. So, my vote goes to him! LOL
I must mention that we have only gone there for regular physicals and not for any sicknesses. But, I have been told that he is very good at diagnosis and about prescribing non-anti-biotic meds. If you have your own experiences to add or ask questions, please do so in the comments.

[…] your pediatricians in the comments. We chose Dr. Arvind Shenoi and I have written about our visit here. Hope this will help those of you who are seeking info about […]
Lovely thanks for this Chitra!
very useful piece of information that too on a personal experience. hats off to you please keep going. we can refer to any one who is in need. It is nice of a pediatician doing full fledged file for the child ( his patient) and handing it over so he is doing a yeomen service by giving that so that what a parent can do is to just see and follow the schedule. wonderful let more no of such committed doctors come out in service of people. it is just important how a doctor diagnoised the disese if any and how he treats ( u have mention about less antibiotics les drugs these are all becoming rare things now a days)
hege bere bere specialists mele barali nimma postgala series.
chitra
that info was indeed very helpful.
Where exactly is “Vyalikaval”.??
In response to Vidya’s comments above -
Dr.Nalini shenoy - dont take changes with this one..! she also visits the Diwakars Hospital. I have a very good opinon about the hospital - but have a very poor opinon about the visiting pediatrician. I have had a couple of bad experiences. in addition..my kid had a heart condition that she could not even diagnose. Its by chance that I visited Apollo hospital and discovered it.
The waiting line is because of the hospitals good reputation - but i am sure not many people would want to come back to her after one or two visits.
Thanks Chitra for the info. We went to Dr. Arvind Shenoi’s clinic in Domlur and he is indeed a very good doctor. We went to 2 other docs before Dr. Shenoi but didn’t get satisfactory answers to our queries and also were not satisfied with the diagnosis.
However, Dr. Shenoi was very busy and didn’t have time to provide any other information except for what we asked him. We expect our pediatritian to let us know things that we might not know as new parents but I guess it’s not possible in a city like Bangalore. We sorely miss our pediatrist in Chandigarh!
Some more:
My son is 3 yrs now and was born in Bangalore.
My gynaec was Dr Arvind Shenoi’s wife, Dr Pravina.
I will not think of anyone else for paediatrician or gynaecologist. After my son’s birth, I moved to Hyd and I was referred to a paediatrician by local friends, He saw the folder and immediately recognized Dr Shenoi who was his classmate during their post-grad days.
I have never experienced him giving antibiotics unless absolutely necessary.
Very useful piece of information
Hi…I just came across your blog and this site a few days ago since my hubby found a good opportunity in B’lore and is determined to R2I in the next few months. I on the other hand am still paranoid about a lot of things…especially since we have an infant who will be turning 1 soon. Any tips and advise on what to bring from here and what not etc.?
Hi Divya,
Check the sections on R2I and R2I tips. Chitra has given a bunch of tips there.
Chitra - thanks for all the posts and tips. They are of tremendous help to a lot of peope who are considering to R2I. Your posts provide an “insider” view of life in India and are of tremendous help.
Hope you keep blogging actively :).

Thanks Susheel…I guess I am looking for answers to some specific questions about infant care in India and what is available v/s what is not. Check out the latest post on my blog ( http://indianinfant.blogspot.com/2008/07/ponderings-about-baby-stuff-in-india.html) and see if you or other readers on this site can help answer any of them.

Hi Chitra,
Thanks a lot for the post on pediatricians. We just moved back to bengaluru from D.C and my kids had their first visit to Dr.Shenoi’s office, he is simply great. I took my kids to him after reading through your post, and your blog is really really good and very helpful for R2I parents. I had mailed you several months back asking about schools. I read your post about that too, but could not secure a seat for my first son in any of the good schools for this year since we were a little late for the admission process. Hopefully next year we will move him to better school. Thanks again.
Hi Chitra,
Thanks for the wonderful blog. I came upon this site when I was searching preschools in North Bangalore. We are planning to R2I in the next couple of months from US. Wanted to know if Dr.Shenoy has any clinics in the North Bangalore area. Also, when does enrollment process begin for preschools.
Thanks again. Shuba
What is it with you Bay Area refugees? We don’t need validation for our doctors from sheeple like you.
Dear Chitra
My wife and self accidently went into this web and found a lot of comments about your serach for a good paed. for you children and Dr Arvind who is our son
He had a lot of ideas in puttingup things equivalent to what you people miss but there are many constraints here
He is so busy he does not have time for his own children and us
There are problems peculiar to India and Bangalore in particular including enormous travel time between house and work stations
Hope things would be better in your children’s time
Best wishes for their brainy and brawny growth
