Schools for autistic kids in Bangalore

Recently, I have had a couple of requests from readers of this blog for info regarding schools for autistic kids in Bangalore. This is such a co-incidence mostly because for the past few months, I have had an opportunity to meet and interact with a few autistic kids, and the experience has been quite touching, to say the least! So, when I got the request for special schools, I set out on this task of finding the most recommended school for special kids, here in Bangalore. I discovered that Academy for Severe Handicap and Autism or ASHA for short, comes with very good recommendation. One of the special education teachers that I know speaks very highly of this school and its founder, Ms. Jayashree Ramesh. And when I spoke with KPAMRC*, they too recommended ASHA highly.

  6. I have been looking for information on schools (for special children) in Indiranagar, Koramangala, etc. There is ASHA school but it mostly caters to severely autistic children. Need to know schools where they try to mix the mildly autistic children with normal children.

Personally I have experienced Child Development Center in Malleswaram. It is attached to Dr. Nandini Mundukar’s clinic. My daughter has mild form of autism and she is showing signs of improvement after 6 months of treatment at CDC. It is located at 15th Cross, Chitrapur Bhavan, Malleswaram

  7. I tried to find any detail I can on Vydehi hospital but no luck. Does anyone know a website for this institute? Unfortunately I live in the US so can’t get there now?

  9. Further to my earlier post on Parijma, Parijma is a Diagnostic Center for Neuro by a well known doctor in this field Dr.Suresh Aroor and he is an established name. They also have child stimulation center for treating childrens with developmental delay and a pre-school which is quite professionally run and a slow learning school. I’m personally availed their pre-school service for my son and it was quite good.

If anyone wants to check out their service and find out more, here is their contact details:

  11. I have a daughter who is 7 yrs old, who cannot speak properly. Her assessment results is IQ 62%, which implies that she is not very bad at IQ. She is neither mentally challenged nor physically handicapped. I am taking her for speech therapy at Sagar Hospital, jayanagar since 6 months. A mild improvement can be seen now. My problem is that I am not able to shortlist any proper school for her. Can someone please help me in this regard.

  12. Honey - Don’t have any specific recommendation for schools. The ones that I have heard of are listed here. May be a good idea to talk to the schools mentioned above and get some thoughts (they may have a referral network).

Reg. speech. - have you tried NAET (treatement?). I remember, Sister Naina in Sophia School was doing this. Talk to her and find out if it may help.

    Good luck.

  21. Hi, My son who is now 12 years old is diagnosed as LD. His IQ is close to 80. He is in to 5th standard and will migrate to 6th, this year. We are at the moment in Mumbai and my son is going to normal school in Mumbai. He also gets remedial coaching by a professional. We will be moving to Bangalore by May 2010 and i am looking for a school where i can admit my son for proper education especially meant for LD students. I would request to guide me with the names of schools in JP Nagar and Jayanagar in Bangalore. Thanks

  22. My son who is now 14 years old is having articulate problems. Because of wrong diagnosis of blood group of his mother, the new born had suffered from juvenile jaundice. His IQ is above 80. He is mentally sound, though physically lagging by 2-3 years when compared to children of his age. He is presently going to a normal school at Ittumadu, Bangalore and has been scoring average / just above average marks. Because of his physical weakness, he is being chided by his co students and gets irritated by the same. The present School authorities are non co operative and indirectly hinted to get out of the school. We are at the moment seeking a suitable school nearer to Uttarahalli, Bangalore for his admission to 8th standard, where students of his type could study with normal children with extra care by teaching staff.Could you please guide me.

  23. Kalkur: You might want to consider one of the alternate schools for him. It might provide him the right amount of freedom for him to do the things he wants. You are likely to face the problems that you have highlighted in any of the main stream schools.

    Good luck.

    Sridhar
